History of Ross Island

The history of Ross Island dates back to the British era, when it served as the capital of the Indian Penal Settlement with modern facilities like bakeries, ballrooms, and printing presses. However, a devastating earthquake in 1941 led to its abandonment. During World War II, the island was occupied by Japanese forces, leaving behind bunkers and war remnants. After independence, it was handed over to the Indian Navy and later renamed in honor of Subhas Chandra Bose.
